- Title: Parallel Video Decoding: Experiences with H.264 and HEVC

Abstract:
High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) is a new video coding standard developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCTVC) from ISO and ITU-T. The new standard aims at reducing the bitrate of H.264/AVC by another 50%. In order to fulfil the computational demands of HEVC, in particular for high resolutions and at low power budgets, exploiting parallelism is no longer an option but a requirement. In this talk I will present our experience with the parallelization of the HEVC decoder for contemporary multi- and many-core processors.
The results show that a highly optiomized parallel HEVC decoder is capable of achieving 4k resolution decoding at high frame rates on a standard multicore CPU. The results also demonstrate that exploiting parallelism can improve the energy efficiency.

Short bio:
Mauricio Alvarez-Mesa received the MSc degree in Electronic Engineering in 2000 from University of Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia and the PhD degree in Computer Science in 2011 from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain. From 2006 to 2011 he was an adjunct lecturer at UPC. He was a summer intern at IBM Haifa Research labs, Israel in 2007, and a research visitor at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), Berlin, Germany in 2011. From 2011 to 2013 he was a research associate for the Multimedia Communications group at the Fraunhofer Institut HHI in Berlin. Currently he is working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Embedded Systems Architecture group at TU Berlin. His research interest includes, among others, parallel computing and video coding.
